For this reading blog I want to talk about the immersive Van Gogh exhibit that travels state to state. I went to see it with a friend of mine and we were kind of laughing the whole time because it felt cheap and fake. But I don’t think that’s exactly fair now that I think back on it. I think digital art, this immersive stuff that’s coming out is a way to make the non-available available. Most of Van Gogh's works are in Amsterdam, and while the price for tickets into the museum are probably 5-20$, the cost for plane tickets are at least 900$. So yeah, if we can make that kind of art accessible in some way, great.

I don’t know, immersive media is difficult for me to fully comprehend in terms of quality and value. It inherently feels cheaper in some way, as if the materials are what makes the quality of the objects. I think the Van Gogh exhibit feels cheap in some way because I know it is usually physical, like there’s a weight or aura to it that digital art can’t capture. But I think that view is a result of privileges I experience. I have the potential to one day go to Amsterdam if I save up for a few years. But many folks can’t ever afford such a trip just to see art. It isn’t fair of me to dismiss the accessibility of something so out of reach. I think that the digital version of most art will always feel a bit diminished compared to the physical, but I also still think it’s incredibly important.
