Project 3 Artist Statement

My project was about childhood trauma in connection to childhood objects. I took some objects like my stuffed animals and an angel statue and a bouquet of fabric flowers. They all feel haunted in some way or another- imbued with memories I’d rather forget despite them not being at all present during those memories. The project is audio reactive. If it registers loud noises, the opacity of the “good” videos lowers and reveals the “bad” videos. I’m referencing the PTSD response for loud noises, a dissolution of happy fantasy that reveals traumatic memories.
I feel like there were a couple issues with my execution, however. The sound reactivity was triggered too easily and since the venue was already quite loud, the opacity was low most of the night. If I were to redo this, I would have a camera that registered movement and switched off the opacity when someone was in front. I also feel like the videos should have been more specific to the piece. Although I’m not exactly sure how useful that would be given the shapes and colors of the objects.
I think the other idea I had would have been more effective given the space and the guests. The idea to have a mannequin with a fitted body over top would have been easy given the simplicity of mannequin shapes and colors. Giving people the opportunity to get in front of the projector would have been more interesting and effectively interactive as well. But the mannequins were pretty expensive.
