I have to be honest. I'm not extremely interested in using AI for this project. When we started, I thought that AI might be the only way to make this project compelling, but then I got into using/ abusing my text editor and glitching these pictures of really old houses. I don't know. I think there's something very interesting in using this technique and subject matter. First, the old Midwest houses portray this idea of rural, old-fashioned, traditional aesthetics, and juxtaposing that with glitches is so meaning-rich. Second, I feel like there's a strong association (at least in my head) of these houses with childhood trauma and trauma suppression. There’s a very wonderful exploration of this theme in Ethel Cain’s Sun Bleached Flies. (I am aware she is a bit problematic; I am simply addressing only this song in my discussion.) I think it could be a synergy here between glitches and childhood memory. Like we could view our memories as corrupted files. There’s also a really amazing potential here for an interactive project or maybe an interactive website project. Like exploring someone else’s head and looking through the files inside their brain, getting deeper and deeper until you find folder after folder of corrupted images, corrupted audio recordings, twists that mask something really awful behind colorful splotches and superimposed photos. Maybe even completely missing files that are greyed out with the words “YOU DO NOT WISH TO REMEMBER THIS” superimposed over it.
